This summer the University of Hawaii’s R/V Kilo Moana will collect bathymetric data on the intersection of Necker Ridge with the Hawaiian Ridge to demonstrate whether there is bathymetric continuity between the two ridges, and map the flanks of Necker Ridge.  The mission, scheduled for July 31 – August 10, 2011, will likely complete the work begun by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Okeanos Explorer in 2009.  Chief scientists are Dr. James V. Gardner and Dr. Brian R. Calder, Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping – Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM-JHC), University of New Hampshire (UNH).  Also onboard, though unrelated to the ECS mission, will be an acoustic Doppler current profiler collecting information on subsurface currents.
